With sometimes painful honesty, an occasional flash of wisdom and a generous helping of wit, Bob Cueni shares his story of living in public housing, working as an infectious disease investigator, and serving Christ's Church as congregational consultant, book author, and local church pastor before retiring from active ministry as a seminary president.

Excerpts from Public Housing Resident to Seminary President: A Pastor’s Memoir

A positive childhood experience: The local congregation was such a loving, safe place I thought of myself as saved by the Church before I understood the meaning of salvation in Christ.

On being polished by life’s bumps: If you persevere through stress, struggle and the inappropriate behavior of others, you can accomplish what otherwise might be impossible.

A family name with more vowels than consonants: When strangers hesitate or stumble over the pronunciation, I try to set them at ease. “Please call me what my friends call me… SIR!’

Lessons from a half century of marriage: A loving relationship has to be hammered out on the anvil of daily give and take, offering forgiveness and being forgiven, sharing and receiving. Learn to live with the less than a perfect partner. Remember, it also helps to remain friends.

The best approach to raising children: All a parent can do is his or her best. Then let go and rely on the Grace of God.

The view from the eighth decade: I would like to come to end of this life with a clear mind, minimum decrepitude, a manageable amount of pain and adequate funding. In that way, I could avoid being a burden for others.

When chased into a corner and looked at carefully: My life has been carried on a billowing cloud of God’s grace. There is not much more one can ask.
